The room is dark; the walls black, apart from a screen. On the screen, a cube made from cubes of sugar; it is beautiful. Oil starts falling on it, melting it into oblivion, a shapeless mass; it is still beautiful.
I think ‘Oil and Sugar #2# by Kader Attia at Tate modern is a genuinely meditative piece of art, the kind that makes your mind fully relax and stop. I found my shoulders lowering, my breathing slowing, my thoughts focused on the screen. I have brought many people to see it and every person has said: ‘I could stay and watch that all day’.
I am facing the screen. The sugar is melting. The oil is glistening in the sun. There is beauty in everything.
